Emergency Eye IrrigationThe Problem
Chemical eye injuries account for up to 22% of ocular trauma and are a major cause of preventable blindness. Alkali exposures can cause permanent damage within minutes—making immediate irrigation critical.
For non-embedded foreign bodies, particles are often microscopic and difficult to remove manually; early irrigation reduces the risk of corneal abrasion and ongoing injury.
Current eye irrigation fails when it matters most:
- Eyewash stations require a standing, cooperative patient and deliver high-pressure, poorly directed water that is often difficult to tolerate.
- Lens-based irrigators are uncomfortable, require trained personnel to place, and often need medication for patient tolerance.
- Manual irrigation often requires two providers—one to maintain eyelid opening and another to deliver fluid—making the process labor-intensive and inefficient.
- Improvised solutions are inconsistent, difficult to standardize, and often require skill to direct fluid to the correct location.
